It Is Time to Plan Your Pond Stocking!
By | Uncategorized
The weather is still a little unpredictable but the calendar says it is time to plan for pond stocking now.
Think back to last year and what you know you had in your pond. Then, on the first nice day you have available, take your fishing pole and some bait and check on your fish. Here are some questions that can help you decide whether you need to stock more fish or whether your pond is in good shape for the year.
1. Was it easy to catch fish that were previously stocked in the pond?
If there weren’t many fish you may need to add more.
2. How did they look? Were they plump and healthy or thin with a large head?
Healthy, plump fish probably have enough to eat and you can relax some.
Thin fish are in need of food or thinning in order to balance the pond in relation to the food supply.
3. What is the visibility in the water?
A visibility of about 18 inches is good. More than that will let the sun hit the bottom and may start unwanted vegetation growth.
4. Are there unwanted weeds or filamentous algae already growing?
Having unwanted vegetation at this time of year indicates a problem. Do not wait until it warms up more to start treating this.
